Simple, elegant, and hard-as-nails! This saddle pack is quintessential Carradice, combining the two aspects which the brand is most renowned for: a practical hard-wearing refuses-to-die construction and a beautiful traditional and timeless style.
The Alston is carefully constructed by hand by skilled craftsmen and women from Nelson, Lancashire, UK. It is made from the famous ‘Cotton duck’ waxed cotton which is waterproof, breathable, incredibly durable and reproofable. If you would like to verify for yourself the long-lasting power of cotton duck, simply have a gleg at some of your fellow riders’ steeds at an audax/classics ride - you are guaranteed to see various vintages of Carradice cotton duck bags going strong, well-loved and well-used by proud owners.
The Alston’s relatively modest 0.5 litre capacity is ideal for stowing those ride necessities you want at-hand in an easy-to-locate place - whether emergency repair tools, spare tube, emergency lights, snacks or wallet/keys/phone.* The Alston attaches onto the saddle rails and seatpost with two adjustable leather straps (which are also replaceable, should you manage to wear them down) and has a third leather strap for securing the bag flap.
A Carradice feels like a special (yet surprisingly reasonable) purchase - it is incredibly refreshing in a time of such throwaway consumerism to find a company dedicated to creating products which will last and can be maintained and renewed. It also feels like a way of connecting with cyclists of the past (and present) and celebrating great British craftsmanship and our great cycling heritage.
*but maybe not a combination of all of these things at once as that might be a bit of a squeeze - if you want to know what can be fitted into the Alston imagine what you could fit into a standard plastic drinks bottle.
