The Thomson Masterpiece is the creme de la creme of the aluminium seatpost world. Despite weighing it at around 40g less than the equivalent size Thomson Elite seatpost (making it approximately 160g for a road post and around 190g for a MTB post), the Masterpiece still beats the competition significantly on strength, equalling the Elite in being 40% stronger than its rivals. Coupled with its infinitely adjustable saddle clamp (with a liberal minus 5° to plus 29° saddle angle tilt range), the Masterpiece is a very nice post to ride on.
Partly this stems from being able to get your saddle angle exactly as you want it, and partly it is down to the peace of mind of knowing that your seatpost is pretty well bullet proof. The design of the Masterpiece takes this one step further, by having built-in post-impact performance aspects: should you be unlucky enough to suffer an impact, the seatpost will protect the saddle, saddle rails and rider through its impact absorbing saddle clamps, which are designed to flex and spread if impacted. The design of the Masterpiece also prevents catastrophic failure: rather than snapping suddenly under severe impact, the seatpost will bend, giving the rider some warning that there is a problem and giving them the opportunity to react to this before the seatpost actually breaks completely.
The Masterpiece is essentially a refinement of Thomson’s legendary Elite seatpost, which is widely regarded as one of the best seatposts on the market. Its additional weight savings are achieved by machining the inside as well as the outside of the post. The outer machining gives the Masterpiece a beautiful finish, complementing your ride whatever its style. The inline version of the Masterpiece is a standard straight seatpost design; if you are interested in increasing the reach, moving your weight further back or changing the position of your hips relative to the pedals the setback option might be more suitable.
